Yes, absolutely. Passive House standards can be applied to a wide range of housing types, including both single-family and multi-family housing. Just as there are strict criteria for single-family houses to be considered a certified PH, mutli-famiy can also be designated as a certified PH project by the Passive House Institute of the U.S. (PHIUS). In fact, a greater number of multi-family buildings have applied for and achieved PH certification in recent years, primarily in the Northeast. However, the largest multi-family PH project in the world to date is located in Kansas City, MO, and is over 300 units.
The benefits of a PH are magnified in a multi-family project, including lower overall energy costs for tenants, decreased noise between apartments, and fresh filtered air in each unit, among other things.
